Hurricane Force WInds, oh my 07/28/2016

It's been a while since I captured a nice shelf cloud coming into the Wichita area.  It set up on a nice cold front that swept into the Wichita area. . .

The first picture was taken up near Newton. Not real spectacular, a bit of a blob.  Maybe a hint of a shelf forming in the lower right hand corner.  I relied on radar data and the storm looked to gain a nice bow echo, so I headed back to the Valley Center area (north of Wichita).

Taken from Galaxy S5, a small fire is seen right of center.  This was non-storm related.

The shelf cloud had developed well and was approaching quickly.  I found an open area facing north and west, (the road goes east and west).

Early reports had baseball sized hail out near Kingman and 80 mph winds.

 I was beginning to see the gust front, so I headed home before the main winds hit.  Although not too bad of winds were recorded in Valley Center, a wind gust in NE Wichita was recorded at 78 mph.

Did We Need More Rain?

Not really, but at least we are out of drought.

A severe warned thunderstorm, but the area of concern seemed to be to the east of my location.  Lots of rain and temps dropped down into the low 60's.

06/07/09 chase

Just me on this adventure.

Watched everything blow up everywhere but tornadic activity was a little out of reach.

There was an interesting storm blowing up south of the Oklahoma border that I decided to intercept vs. chasing east (by chasing I mean finding out that I wouldn't get to the storms until I hit Missouri).

I stopped at the Bel Plaine rest stop to figure out what the storm was doing. Unfortunately, it was dying. It looked like it might try to rebuild but had a definant rotation to it. The bottom produced a nice shelf cloud as the updraft gave up and released all the wind, rain, and hail to the earth below.

I took this about 7:30pm. The storm passed overhead and the temp dropped about 10 degrees. I stood out in it until the wind driven rain started to hurt.

More storms possible tomorrow.
